Footprints In The Sand

Many of you might have heard the Poem of the footprints in the sand, but many of you have probably not. SO I thought that this might be a good  poem to share on my blog. The poem is told in first person, but I would like you to keep in mind that this is not about me. I am simply retelling a poem. So here it goes……

One night I dreamed a dream.
I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and one to my Lord.

When the last scene of my life shot before me I looked back at the footprints in the sand. There was only one set of footprints. I realized that this was at the lowest and saddest times of my life. This always bothered me and I questioned the Lord about my dilemma.

“Lord, You told me when I decided to follow You, You would walk and talk with me all the way. But I’m aware that during the most troublesome times of my life there is only one set of footprints. I just don’t understand why, when I need You most, You leave me.”

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.”

Reflection: We tend to think that the moment we go into a hard trial or issue, and don’t feel the Lord standing next to us holding Out hands, that He has left us. This is clearly untrue, Our Lord never leaves us, EVER! This poem is a perfect explanation of how Our Lord never leaves us. When we go into a trial and feel afraid we must remember that He did not leave us, when we don’t feel Him holding our hands, as he said,” When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.” Our Lord carries us! He carries us when we struggle, and when we go under trials. He will never abandon us EVER! Even when we sin or make bad choices, as we do a lot. How great is it to know that Our Lord, forgives us, and never leaves us, and not only does he not leave us, but He carries us when we need it, and are unable to walk on our own. Even when you feel as though as you are alone, You are not Alone! He loves us, and in return we shall love the Lord with ALL our heart, ALL our mind, and ALL our soul! So with that we must pray…….                                                                                                                                              Guide me, O thou great redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer;
Be thou still my strength and shield;
Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee;
I will ever give to thee.                                                                                                                    AMEN.

May God bless whomever reads this and all their families, may they all bring peace and Joy to the world!!!!!!I now leave you with one of my most favorite quotes by Saint John Paul II!

“It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle.

It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal.”

  1. Oh, how often we find a million and one things to complain about…particularly about God and how He answers our prayers…So many times when I hear people complaining how God abandoned them during their trials… I just want to remind them about the last line in the poem…remind them…that it is only through the strength and mercy of God that we are able to survive anything at all. Thanks for reminding us about this important message. God Bless!
